PROFILE

I started drawing at an early age, like most kids do, but my hobby turned to a passion. I've always had great interest in art all through school and work. I am a self taught artist and have always liked the challenge of creating something that I don't know much about. I've always tried different mediums - oils which are a lot slower to use, acrylics which I like for the faster drying times, anything with pens, inks or charcoals; pastels are good for portraits.

Wood burning is a new medium for me, and sculpture has been interesting dealing with perspectives.

I've even tried sculpturing a full size power pole with paua shells on it, which is standing at the entrance way to a farm that I go to.

I've done a lot of commission work for people over the years which is a challenge, having to do something you normally wouldn't want to do.

I taught myself sign-writing - went out and bought some brushes and trained myself on the job, which was a bit scary. I moved into the computer side of business but didn't find it very interesting, but it paid the bills.

I went and painted at a gallery in Petone (Brave Art on Jackson Street). I painted in the window which took a while to get used to - sometimes having a lot of people looking at me.

The shop taught me a lot about the art business and how to sell things, and I met a lot of good people and contacts.

Portraits are my strong point, but I change subjects around a bit to make it more interesting.

I've done some murals over the years which I like to do, but not on such a big scale now.

I was in an exhibition in Napier a long time ago, twice I sold my picture in the first hour, which was a record. They picked out so many artists from around the country and it was a good experience for me.

I haven't done anything else to promote myself since, but for the gallery in Petone. I still have a lot of paintings tucked away.

I like doing subjects from my mind, especially sketches about life and different experiences I come across.

I want to make ART my full-time job now, which is something I look forward to doing as I get older.
